Abstract

The application of semiotic-semantic processes and patterns to the poem Khosrow and Shirin appears essential, since the principal framework of meaning production in the work is shaped by the predominance of the force of love as a sensory-perceptual process. Indeed, examining whether such patterns are confirmed or rejected in the process of meaning production within this poem can yield significant findings. Accordingly, identifying the mechanisms and principal elements involved in the formation and production of meaning in the narrative, as well as Nizami’s distinctive techniques in this regard, can lead to remarkable conclusions. Through closer examination and analysis of the text’s underlying layers, the reader realizes that all of its metaphors and symbols possess precise meanings that are closely connected with the poem’s central theme. An examination of the various forms of deviation and foregrounding in Nizami’s poetry demonstrates that semantic deviation constitutes one of the most prominent manifestations of foregrounding in his poetic language. Within the domain of semantic deviation, which is associated with figurative language and imagery, Nizami employs numerous forms of foregrounding. He also introduces considerable innovation and foregrounding at the level of content. It can therefore be argued that Nizami’s Khosrow and Shirin is undoubtedly one of the most outstanding works that can be classified among open and interpretively rich literary texts and occupies a distinguished position within his oeuvre. Nizami places words at the service of subtle and refined meanings, and his mastery of this technique was such that few could rival his poetic achievement. His sophisticated artistic techniques contribute significantly to the foregrounding and uniqueness of his poetry. Accordingly, the present study primarily examines the poetic resources employed by Nizami for semantic foregrounding in Khosrow and Shirin, with the aim of identifying the distinctive qualities that establish this remarkable work as an unparalleled narrative poem.
