The Reflection of Nature and the Environment in the Works of Ahmad Reza Ahmadi from an Ecocritical Perspective

Abstract

Poetry is a distinguished art form that has long been closely connected with nature, and poets are artists who have continually drawn upon natural resources and, in accordance with prevailing norms and the characteristics of their own worlds, have benefited from nature’s diverse capacities. Moreover, the language through which nature and its elements are represented in poetry possesses particular features, some of which constitute the subject matter of ecocriticism. Ecocriticism examines the relationship between nature and culture, as well as the cultural constructions manifested in language and literature. This qualitative study is fundamental in terms of purpose and was conducted using a descriptive-analytical method based on a close reading of the works of Ahmad Reza Ahmadi. For the purposes of analysis and interpretation, authoritative books in the field, electronic libraries, websites, articles, and theses related to the subject were consulted, along with the views of scholars in Persian language and literature. The data and samples were extracted through systematic note-taking from the texts of Ahmadi’s poems and stories and were subsequently analyzed on the basis of the role of nature within an ecocritical framework. The findings of this study demonstrate that attention to nature and the environment, as well as the influence of ecological context on contemporary Persian literature, is clearly evident in Ahmadi’s poetry. The results further indicate that ecologically oriented themes, such as respect for natural elements, promotion of kindness toward animals, preservation of natural beauty, and the transmission of environmental responsibility to future generations, occupy a central position in Ahmadi’s works. In his writings, nature serves as a refuge for tranquility, a teacher of wisdom, and a companion in the pursuit of liberation and hope. Ahmadi employs natural symbols and elements sometimes in their literal sense and at other times figuratively and metaphorically; nevertheless, throughout his works, he effectively and indirectly encourages readers to respect and protect the environment through the use of literary devices such as allegory, metaphor, imagery, deviation from linguistic norms, ambiguity, defamiliarization, and other stylistic techniques.
