An Analysis of Female Characters in Two Novels by Fariba Vafi Based on Jungian Archetypes

Abstract

The application of fundamental psychoanalytic concepts to examine the inner and psychological dimensions of female characters within fictional narratives has recently attracted considerable scholarly attention. The present study aimed to analyze the female characters in Fariba Vafi’s two novels, Another Day of Shura and A Secret in the Alleys, based on Jungian archetypal concepts and through a descriptive-analytical approach. The findings demonstrated that, in Another Day of Shura, the emotional crisis resulting from the breakdown of marital relations leads to the emergence of conflicting masks and roles within the protagonist’s personality. The persona, as a social mask, stands in opposition to the shadow and the animus, while the female protagonist, in attempting to preserve her social image, experiences inner fragmentation and psychological tension. This fragmentation provides the basis for confronting the unconscious and initiating the process of individuation. By contrast, in A Secret in the Alleys, the narrator achieves a form of inner reconciliation and self-understanding by returning to the past, revisiting memories, and confronting elements of the unconscious. This process not only reflects a woman’s psychological journey into her inner self but also symbolizes the transcendence of socially imposed boundaries and the attainment of psychic wholeness. Overall, it may be concluded that Fariba Vafi, through a profound, psychoanalytic, and woman-centered perspective, portrays women not as passive characters but as individuals undergoing transformation, developing self-awareness, and seeking liberation from oppressive structures. Her works further demonstrate that narrative fiction can serve as an effective medium for the psychological and social analysis of women’s identities in contemporary Iranian society.
