Abstract

This study examines the fundamental role of nonverbal communication in shaping human interactions and, more specifically, explores its reflection in two major Azerbaijani-Turkish works by Master Shahriar. Although spoken and written language are considered the primary tools for conveying meaning, research findings indicate that nonverbal cues—such as body movements, facial expressions, eye contact, tone of voice, and even silence—convey a substantial portion of communicative messages. Using a descriptive–analytical approach and an interdisciplinary perspective within the field of communication studies, this research analyzes two of Shahriar’s prominent works, Heydar Babaya Salam and Sahandīyeh. The analysis and decoding of nonverbal behaviors in these texts reveal that literary works can serve as rich sources for understanding cultural and communicative dimensions that extend beyond verbal language. They also hold significant value in various areas, including intercultural communication. Among the forms of nonverbal communication, Heydar Babaya Salam features a greater emphasis on behavioral stance, physical appearance, vocal tone, interpersonal distance, facial movements, and gaze, whereas Sahandīyeh displays a stronger presence of behavioral stance, physical appearance, and environmental conditions. Notably, the poet employs nonverbal communication more extensively in Heydar Babaya Salam than in Sahandīyeh.
