<p>Children’s and young adult fiction provides a dynamic context for representing the ways in which human development, learning, and agency unfold within the social environment. Drawing on Albert Bandura’s social cognitive theory, the present study examines how the “triadic interaction” among children’s internal characteristics, environmental forces, and behavioral consequences is represented in the short-story collection Pomegranate Smile by Houshang Moradi Kermani. The study employed a descriptive-analytical method and qualitative analysis of data derived from selected stories, including “Pomegranate Smile,” “Six Bananas,” “Butterfly,” and “Nest.” The findings indicate that the child and adolescent characters in this collection are not passive recipients of environmental pressures or external rewards and punishments; rather, they are active agents who respond to their surrounding circumstances through cognitive processes—including attention, intrinsic motivation, memory, and anticipation of consequences—as well as self-regulatory mechanisms. The narrative environment, encompassing the family, the traditional school, and poverty, not only influences the child but is itself transformed as a result of the child’s choices and behaviors. Moreover, rather than functioning mechanically, behavioral consequences operate as a “source of information and self-evaluation,” thereby contributing to the formation of the child’s sense of self-efficacy. Ultimately, Moradi Kermani’s artistic achievement lies in his representation of this dynamic and reciprocal cycle among the child’s mind, the social context, and the consequences of the child’s actions.</p>
