<p>The present study analyzes the intertextual connections between the Taʿlīq and Nastaʿlīq scripts during the 7th to 9th centuries AH. This qualitative-analytical research, conducted using a library-based method, employs Gérard Genette’s intertextuality theory to examine the complex and systematic interaction within Iranian-Islamic calligraphy in its historical, political, cultural, and religious contexts. The Taʿlīq and Nastaʿlīq scripts, regarded as dynamic and living texts, not only preserve their spiritual and artistic characteristics but also introduce innovative and advanced principles in aesthetics and legibility, developments that significantly influenced calligraphy across the Islamic world. This study is a descriptive-analytical investigation grounded in Genette’s five main categories—intertextuality, paratextuality, metatextuality, hypertextuality, and architextuality—which collectively demonstrate the continuous dialogue, re-creations, and reciprocal critiques within calligraphic scripts. The findings reveal a multilayered, dynamic, and vibrant process of interactions that ultimately shaped an enduring and influential cultural and artistic identity. This extensive transtextual network, while preserving the artistic authenticity of the scripts, contributed to significant innovations in the art of calligraphy. Moreover, applying Genette’s theory offers new opportunities for interdisciplinary analyses of art, literature, and culture. The present research shows that the Taʿlīq and Nastaʿlīq scripts function not merely as artistic legacies but as living symbols of Iranian-Islamic cultural identity, reflecting continuity and creative transformation. This study can thus pave new pathways for future research in calligraphy and interdisciplinary studies in art and culture.</p>
